Senator Dave Min Releases Statement on the Governor’s Proposed Budget, Surplus Spending
SACRAMENTO, CA — Senator Min (D-Irvine) released the following statement in response to Governor Gavin Newsom’s proposed 2022-23 Budget:
“As California enters the third year of this pandemic, the economic health of our state is stronger than ever. With a historic surplus of $45.7 billion, we are in a unique position to act decisively against the COVID-19 crisis and lay a foundation for the future of California, sustained by investment in our economy, education, and environmental stewardship.”
“What we do in this moment will impact California’s long term future, and I was extremely pleased that Governor Newsom wants to invest in the needs of all Californians. The proposed 2022-23 Budget builds on investments made in our last budget, such as small business relief, the environment and education. As an advocate for innovation and small businesses, I was extremely pleased to see an R&D tax credit that will spur greater investments in our startups, including in those working to fight the climate crisis. I look forward to working with my colleagues and the Governor to enact a budget that reflects the priorities of Orange County residents and all Californians.”
Key provisions from the Governor’s budget proposal include:
- WILDFIRES: $2.7 billion toward forest health and fire protection, including the creation of a new CalOES Southern California Regional Operations Center.
- EDUCATION: $39.6 million proposed for the University of California, California State University, and California Community Colleges. $119 billion proposed for K-12 education, with major investments in promoting school fiscal stability and investing in early education.
- CLIMATE CHANGE: $6.1 billion toward green modes of transportation, including Zero-Emission Vehicles and $2 billion proposed a Clean Energy Investment Plan.
