Senator Min Releases Statement Regarding Special Session
(SACRAMENTO, CA) – State Senator Dave Min (D-Irvine) issued the following statement announcing that he would not be participating in today’s special session vote on ABX2 1.
“I am supportive of the goals of ABX2 1, which aims to address the problem of high gas prices in this state. We should be looking to investigate and address why California gas prices are higher than they should be, including the mystery surcharge that penalizes our drivers, as well as the massive price spikes that occurred in 2022. That is what ABX2 1 aims to do.
However, opponents of ABX2 1 have raised serious concerns about whether the specific policy proposals in this bill will accomplish those goals and also whether this legislation may have counterproductive impacts. These concerns deserve a fair and full vetting, which is difficult to do in a special session conducted just weeks before many of the current legislators will be leaving office.
At the same time, I have not heard a compelling rationale as to why this bill needs to be advanced in October 2024 as opposed to being heard when the Legislature reconvenes in January 2025.
For those reasons, I have decided to abstain from voting on ABX2 1 and to refrain from participating in this Special Session called by the Governor.”
